Your Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license must be renewed every two years. It is illegal to practice with an expired license. The license expires at midnight on the expiration date, which is the last day of the RCP's birth month.
A RCP has two options for license renewal, by mail or online using BreEZe Online Services. You are eligible to renew your license online if:
- Your license is in an active, inactive, or delinquent status;
- Your license expires within the next 90 days or is already expired;
- You have completed your continuing education requirements, including the Law and Professional Ethics course, if applicable.

If you are having trouble with your BreEZe account, please contact the Board toll free at (866) 375-0386 or by email at email@example.com.
NOTICE: The Board waives the renewal requirements for military personnel when they are called to active duty. Please refer to the Military Personnel and Military Spouses/Domestic Partners page for additional details.
Failure to complete your license renewal completely will result in a hold being placed on your license renewal. In order to continue with processing your renewal, you must complete all highlighted sections on the Notice of Renewal Deficiency form and return it to the Board in one of the following ways:
- Fax: (916) 263-7311
- Email: firstname.lastname@example.org
- Mail: 3750 Rosin Court, Suite 100, Sacramento, CA 95834
Once the completed form is received and you have satisfied all renewal requirements, your license will be renewed and your updated pocket card will be mailed to you within 2-3 business days.
Inactive License Renewal
If you are not currently employed as an RCP but would like your license to remain current and avoid delinquent fees, you have the option of renewing inactive. The only difference between active and inactive status is the continuing education requirement. If you wish to renew inactive, you are not required to complete the CEUs, however the renewal fee is still the same. If your license is inactive, you are not authorized to practice respiratory care in the State of California.
The inactive and active renewal process is the same. For more information on renewing, please refer to the Online Services section above.
