License Renewal

Your Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license must be renewed every two years. It is illegal to practice with an expired license. The license expires at midnight on the expiration date, which is the last day of the RCP's birth month.

You can verify the status and expiration date of your license online through the License Search.

Your license is eligible for renewal 90 days before your license expiration date and once you have completed the continuing education requirements, including the Law and Professional Ethics course, if applicable.

NOTICE: The RCB waives the renewal requirements for military personnel when they are called to active duty. Please refer to the Military Personnel and Military Spouses/Domestic Partners page for additional details.

Renewal Deficiency

Failure to complete your license renewal completely will result in a hold being placed on your license renewal. In order to continue with processing your renewal, you must complete all highlighted sections on the Notice of Renewal Deficiency form and return it to the RCB in one of the following ways:

Once the completed form is received and you have satisfied all renewal requirements, your license will be renewed and your updated pocket card will be mailed to you within 2-3 business days.

Inactive License Renewal

If you are not currently employed as an RCP but would like your license to remain current and avoid delinquent fees, you have the option of renewing inactive. The only difference between active and inactive status is the continuing education requirement. If you wish to renew inactive, you are not required to complete the CEUs, however the renewal fee is still the same. If your license is inactive, you are not authorized to practice respiratory care in the State of California.
