A Legacy of Service in Respiratory Care
Michael Terry, BSRT, RCP, RRT, RPFT, CCRC, brings more than 40 years of experience in respiratory care to his role on the Board, where he remains committed to protecting the health and safety of Californians. Since 1982, Michael has worked in various capacities at Loma Linda University Medical Center, where he now serves as a Research Coordinator for the Department of Respiratory Care. In this role, he evaluates, develops, and executes research protocols and currently oversees 16 active clinical studies!
Why He Serves
He joined the Board to contribute to its mission and offer insights gained from decades of clinical and academic experience. His goal is to support efforts that uphold high standards in respiratory care and help ensure patients receive safe, effective treatment across California.
Most Rewarding Experience
One of the most meaningful aspects of his Board service has been working alongside fellow members who share a deep commitment to the public. “Working with people of diverse backgrounds has helped me to gain valuable perspectives on how RCP’s can contribute to the health of Californian” Michael shared.
Impact on His Work and Perspective
Michael notes that his time on the Board has deepened his appreciation for the role RCPs play in patient safety. As an adjunct faculty member for the School of Respiratory Therapy at Loma Linda, he brings this public-focused perspective into the classroom. “It’s important that future practitioners see their work not only as a profession, but as a responsibility to the public,” he said.
Looking Ahead
Looking forward, Michael hopes to continue contributing to discussions that strengthen respiratory care standards and ensure that patients across California receive safe, effective treatment. Reflecting on how the field has evolved, he shared that when he began his career, RCPs were often viewed as technicians simply carrying out orders. Over time, however, he has seen the profession grow into a vital part of the care team. RCPs now play a key role in guiding therapy and improving outcomes through their specialized assessments and deep understanding of respiratory treatments. Michael is committed to supporting policies that recognize and reinforce the value RCPs bring to patient care.
His Message to Californians
“To the public, I want people to know that RCPs are highly trained professionals who play a critical role in medical care. California is fortunate to have some of the most dedicated and skilled respiratory care providers in the nation.”
To his fellow RCPs, he adds: “Always look for opportunities to grow your skills and knowledge. Your service matters.”
Fun Fact
Outside of his Board service, Michael has proudly served on the CSRC Sputum Bowl Committee for over 20 years, helping organize these energetic and educational competitions. “I invite everyone to come to a competition and enjoy the energy!”
